What is Digital Preservation?, pres. by TAPE

What is Digital Preservation?

‍

Our lives are scattered across hard drives, cloud storage, laptops, and phones. Photos, documents, creative projects, and important files pile up in the digital ether. This can quickly become overwhelming and disempowering! And if we’re not careful, our important files can disappear altogether.

‍

Led by audio-visual archivists, this workshop will help you in keeping your digital life organized, accessible, and safe for the long haul. Join us for this practical, introductory workshop that is designed for absolute tech beginners. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to build better file-management habits and make more informed decisions about long-term storage. Whether you’re managing years of a photography practice, floppy disks full of word documents, a desktop littered with files named final_final_v3, or a cellphone full of your digital memories, this workshop is the starting place for you!

‍

You’ll learn core best practices to:

- Organize your hard drives: Develop a file structure that makes sense and is easy to maintain.

- Migrate files with confidence: Learn how to move files between devices with fixity.

- Find and manage duplicates: Identify redundant files and reclaim valuable storage space.

- Make informed storage decisions: Understand your options for local storage, cloud services, and backups.

- Start anew: Build sustainable habits that make it easier to manage new files.

‍

You’ll also have the opportunity to ask audio-visual archivists your burning questions! You’ll walk away with more confidence and excitement about the task of caring for your digital life!
