Bill Gunn’s work as a director, screenwriter, playwright, novelist, and actor is peerless in its surreal incision and morbid wit, examining sexuality, blackness, postmodernity, and domestic politics. His two major film works of the 1970s ([Redacted] and Ganja & Hess) faced commercial suppression but have gained consensus critical adoration alongside the re-emergence of his long-missing TV collaboration with Ishmael Reed, Personal Problems.
