Intro to 16mm Experimental Animation

Join TAPE Los Angeles for a beginner’s introduction to creating animation on 16mm film! No photography, film or animation experience required. This is a foundational guide to using the Bolex camera to create in-camera animation on film, a look at the history of 16mm experimental filmmaking, and an exploration of different animation techniques. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of the mechanics of film, the Bolex camera, and how to get started cranking out shot-on-film animation with special effects and a better grasp on the endless possibilities therein for filmmakers!

This workshop combines proficiency basics that get you shooting on a Bolex and experimental techniques for animation that go beyond shooting cartoons–skills that are also applicable to down shooting drawings or stop-motion. We’ll look at examples of experimental techniques at the beginning of the workshop and dive into shooting on Ones and Twos (and Threes and Fours), introductory cinematography concepts, making aesthetic/practical choices, pixelation and more!

The film we shoot in the workshop will be processed at a local professional lab and 2K scanned for all to enjoy afterwards!

All TAPE workshop participants walk away with plenty of local and available resources for acquiring film and processing it, including a thorough resource list for processing your own film at home using non-toxic or standard chemicals. Every piece of equipment used or mentioned in TAPE film workshops is available to our local community of artists and makers through our affordable equipment rental library, including cameras, editing equipment and processing tanks.
