A hands-on introduction to film preservation best practices for artists and aspiring archivists. If you’re an artist shooting on analog film, learn how to care for your films, monitor their health, and develop storage systems. If you’re interested in film preservation, learn how to identify film formats, a film’s age, and deterioration. Overall, this is a course designed to get people who have never touched film excited about handling and repairing damage. And for artists to feel confident about caring for their work in the long run.
Taught by film archivists, Jackie Forsyte and Veronica Luke. Jackie is T.A.P.E.’s Technical Director and has worked in archival film scanning and remastering. Veronica is the Archival Film Manager at Origins Archival, a post-production and archival film scanning company.
The workshop’s hands–on portion will be a step-by-step walkthrough of:
- Archival film handling and inspection practices
- Winding and loading onto reels
- Splicing
- Identifying film stocks, Kodak edge codes, and camera markers
In the discussion portion, we will review:
- Common types of damage and decay
- Steps to prevent further deterioration
- Methods for storing and monitoring acetate and polyester-based films
- Storage strategies for personal collections for artists, collectors, and archivists
Special thanks to Origins Archival for lending film inspection equipment.
