A crash course on the tools and habits to share, safekeep, and check on your digital (or digitized) video files. This three hour workshop will cover basic concepts in digital preservation and common digital collection care tasks.
TAPE volunteers (who also happen to be professional A/V archivists) will give a brief, no-nonsense presentation on digital preservation and why you should care. The presentation will also:
- Define key terms in plain language,
- Identify the most common digital preservation risks,
- Dispel popular misconceptions about file formats and devices,
- Outline simple habits to ensure long-term file access.
The Workshop’s hands-on portion will be a step-by-step walkthrough of TAPE’s post-digitization workflow. Together, we will use the same tools as professional archivists to prepare our files to be shared & cared for:
- Reformat and manipulate video files
- Investigate key technical metadata
- Check on the fixity (sameness) of files
- Assess the condition and suitability of hardware involved
