16mm Non-Toxic B&W Film Processing Workshop

Join T.A.P.E. Los Angeles for a non-toxic hand processing 16mm film workshop where we’ll learn how to mix household chemicals into a photo developer, shoot 16mm film and process our roll of 7222 Kodak Double X film as a b&w negative. No prior film experience necessary!

We’ll start the afternoon with a quick proficiency run-down of the mighty Bolex Rex 5 16mm camera, discuss light metering on an analog meter, and we will cover resources on where to purchase, process and scan 16mm film. We will then shoot 1 100' roll of b&w negative film collectively around Whammy!’s neighborhood. When we finish the roll we’ll mix our household chemicals and demonstrate how to use a 50’ Lomo tank, which is available to rent from TAPE. The film will be loaded onto the Lomo reel and processed with our freshly mixed non-toxic developer. Participants will walk away with a list of eco-processing resources and confidence to do it on their own.

The film will then be scanned by artist-run Origins Archival in Hollywood, located within the Kodak house on Sunset Blvd.

This workshop will be co-facilitated by local filmmaker and teaching artist Erica Sheu. Erica’s films and expanded cinema works have been programmed domestically and abroad in numerous festivals. Erica has taught hand-processing workshops with Mono No Aware, makes most of her work on film and has extensive knowledge about the photochemical process she is excited to share with this group.
